⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Lena
Age: Chronologically 15, mentally ~teen-ish
Canon: DuckTales (2017)
Canon Point: Immediately after the season 1 finale (The Shadow War!)

Background:
Fifteen years before the beginning of the show, Scrooge McDuck defeated Magica De Spell by turning her magic against her, trapping her in his Number One Dime. Out of desperation, Magica cast a spell to turn her shadow into an independent being, giving it her magic staff as an amulet and advising/commanding it through its shadow. It's questionable how conscious Magica's creation was at first, but by the time we first meet her in episode 4, she's developed into a fully thinking, feeling, and snarking duck named Lena.

Lena begins to hang out with Webbigail Vanderquack, quickly becoming good friends with the girl after a shared adventure involving the Beagle Boys. Initially the friendship is simply a ruse for Lena to get close to Scrooge, retrieve his Number One Dime, and free Magica from her self-inflicted prison. But Lena quickly grows to truly care for Webby, and the combination of Magica's cruelty and Webby's kindness show her there's a better way, one that involves turning on Magica and asking for Scrooge's help. Unfortunately, Magica's power grows strong enough for her to take control of Lena's body before she can tell Scrooge the truth.

Magica regains the Dime and her true form, dragging poor Lena back into her shadow, where she remains trapped for most of the finale. But Lena manages to fight back in the final battle, emerging briefly to protect Webby and fight for control of Magica's staff. She's blasted and seems to be killed for good, but appears for just an instant at the end in Webby's shadow. Their friendship has given her hope for a better existence... though it may take a while, since no one knows she's there yet.

Personality:
At first blush, Lena appears to be very much the typical too-cool-for-school delinquent teen, meeting Webby's enthusiastic greetings with monosyllabic answers, then inviting her to sneak into a Beagle Boys birthday party with her. She has a snarky joke ready for any situation and sarcastic nicknames aplenty for Mrs. Beakley, and she particularly loves pranking the straitlaced Huey. Heck, she specifically describes herself as a "mysterious rebel playing by her own rules". As it turns out, though, this devil-may-care persona is partially cultivated, masking the softer side that she hides from everyone in general and Magica in specific. As she grows closer to Webby, that softer side begins to come to the fore.

For Lena's whole life, Magica has been the closest thing she's had to "family", which is why she distrusts the concept when Webby first brings it up. She calls Magica her aunt, but the sorceress treats her far more like a tool than a niece, and the poor girl has no real notion that any other family is different. She's quick to assume the worst of those she meets, simply because she's had no reason to assume anything better before. Magica has always motivated her through yelling and threats, so seeing the way the McDuck Manor residents care for each other opens her eyes to family's real meaning. Lena envies Scrooge and the others their family bonded by love, wishing she could be a part of a family that actually cares for one another the way they do.

As much as she tries to be "comically indifferent" (as an alternate comic cover puts it), it doesn't take long for Webby and her family to become important to Lena. It visibly hurts her when Mrs. Beakley dismisses her as a bad influence on her granddaughter, and yet Lena still refuses to leave her to die when she's trapped under a subway car. Webby's unquestioning loyalty and kindness is what really reaches her, to the point that when she's magically shown her worst nightmare, losing Webby is worse to her than Magica being freed. Lena wants to be the caring, loyal BFF that Webby thinks she is... and free of Magica's influence, maybe she can be.

Abilities:
Magic: Using her amulet (that was once Magica's staff) or the friendship bracelet that links her to Webby, Lena is able to cast magic spells, telekinesis and force fields being the two shown in the series. (This can probably just be folded in with the magic that Empatheias gives her, though.)

Alignment: Going to go with Peromei! Lena vacillates between despair at being trapped by Magica and hope that she'll keep her word when she's freed. And for a few moments at the end of The Other Bin, she has some real hope that Scrooge can defeat Magica if she speaks up.

Other: I think that about covers it!
